"September's meeting topic, "The Future Isn't
What It Used to Be", was presented by George Welles III. He
brought an interesting focus to our current slow economic recovery
and the pain a number of our fellow communications professionals
are experiencing by contrasting the predictions of from the past
100 years and the circumstances in which they were made with those
being made today.
He finished with tips
for surviving this difficult down time in our industry, and
offered some predictions: the current "jobless recovery"
economy will likely morph into a "jobs recovery" economy
by mid- 2004, with positive consequences for MCA-I members and others
involved in the training sector. Employers will once again provide
training as an employee benefit to retain employees and lessen the
amount of job turnovers that will accompany a return to fully robust
economy.
After finishing a distinguished career with U S WEST (now
Qwest) as Manager of Broadband Applications, Welles continues his
work in communications as a speaker and consultant on the potentials
and consequences of technology with a variety of large companies
and US government. Clients of his company, Imaging Futures, Inc.,
include the Telework Consortium, Hoffmann-La Roche, St. Paul Companies,
Roadway Express, 3M, Cargill, Minnesota Power, Ceridian, Cisco,
Eastman Kodak, Boeing, Intel, SAFECO, Merck, Johnson & Johnson,
Target Corp., US Bank Corp, Thrivent Financial the International
Communications Industries Association (ICIA) and numerous universities
and research facilities. Mr. Welles also serves as President and
CEO of Allargeo, LTD. He is co-founder of the US Department of Defense
Digital Imaging Symposium, a member of the Minnesota High Technology
Association (MHTA), the Armed Forces Communication and Electronics
Association (AFCEA),an accredited member of the Communications Media
Management Association, Vice Chair of the University of Minnesota
Computer Science Department Advisory Board, and an advisor to the
Minnesota Future Work Task Force and the Minnesota Office of Technology.
